Nick Drake was born in Stockbridge, Hampshire, on 20 January 1948. He was the son of a schoolmaster and a housewife and had a sister, Sally, who later became a nurse. When he was six years old, his father died and his mother remarried. The family moved to London, where Nick went to Bancroft's School
He began writing songs at the age of ten, and by the time he was seventeen, had composed around three hundred songs. When he was nineteen he played his two earliest songs – "House of Jealous Lovers" and "You Know I'm No Good" – at the Roundhouse Folk Club in Camden Town.
